Jaw pain

Pain in the jaw can be caused by clenching or grinding your teeth.

The clenching or grinding of teeth produces very high forces on the teeth and the jaw joint. The effect on the teeth is wear, reducing the size and natural shape of the teeth and over time cracks and possibly the breaking of teeth. Another possible consequence is the crowding or developing of spaces between the teeth. Jaw pain and headaches (which are often worse in the morning) can occur. Waking up with an awareness of the teeth may happen. Clenching or grinding can occur during the day or at night. People who clench or grind their teeth at night are often not even aware that they are doing so and may do so silently in their sleep or often a partner reports that they hear a grinding/squeaking noise.

A night splint is a slim but hard mouthguard which covers the upper teeth. When worn at nigh, a night splint will protect the teeth by preventing the upper and lower teeth from coming into contact with each other.

For some, grinding and clenching is a lifestyle issue, characterised by stress, smoking or recreational drugs.
